Wu Tang Clan at the National

The Wu Tang Clan has always presented itself as a foreign entity, expanding its eastern-influenced empire like some musical Chinese dynasty. Despite releasing only five studio albums as a collective throughout 15 years, the band has nevertheless established itself as a household name in hip-hop. With vibrant personas such as RZA, Raekwon “the Chef” and Ghostface Killah, the group exhibits its characters so dynamically through music and media appearances — even with more than a half-dozen voices vying for space on a single track — there's never a sense of exclusion. The ensemble plays the National on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. $30-$35. 612-1900. — Alexander Chang
