Ben Stevenson, 66: Owner, Ben’s Barber Shop

Women, cars and clothes — those are my bad habits.

I’m old school. Back in the ’60s, men dressed — kept their hair looking nice all the time. But it’s just like anything goes now. That’s just not my shtick. I like a suit and tie all the time. That’s just my style. You know, you could be broke, right, but you get a haircut, put on a suit — you feel like you’ve got money in your pocket. Nobody knows you’re poor if you don’t tell them. You can have a real bad day, break up with a girlfriend, but you get a haircut and a shave and you’ll feel good instead of feeling down and out, self-pity — all that kind of crazy stuff. See, life is what you make of it.

I came here 14 years ago from New York City. I just came for a change of pace. There was some static with my ex-girlfriend so I decided to leave. Sometimes you got to run from the trouble. But I’m not really feeling it here like back home. I like excitement. I’m not knocking Richmond, I just want to go back home. I’ve put it in God’s hands.
