The Version City Parties started in 1997 at the old Coney Island High club on St. Mark’s Place in New York’s East Village. Basically, they were parties with a revolving roster of bands inspired by Jamaican roots music and dance culture. The event grew to become one of the premiere ska-roc-steady-reggae-dub events on the East Coast, and now a tour is headed to Richmond. Featuring some of the best ska music available anywhere, the event will showcase live music from the “old school” King Django, former front man of Stubborn All-Stars and founder of Stubborn Records, as well as supporting reggae act the Snails and Matt MacLeod of Bethlehem, Penn.’s soul-reggae troupe the Heavy Beat. The fun goes down at Balliceaux on Friday, Jan. 18, at 10:30 p.m. $7. balliceauxrva.com.
