United States Colored Troops at the Battle of the Petersburg, June 15, 1864

When: Sun., Feb. 26, 1:30 p.m. 2017

Petersburg National Battlefield will offer a walking tour highlighting the role of United States Colored Troop regiments during the June 15, 1864 assault on Petersburg. Park Curator Emmanuel Dabney will lead the 90 minute program that begins at the Eastern Front Visitor Center parking lot and concludes at Tour Stop 3. Visitors will hear stories about the battle and the African-American privates and non-commissioned officers as well as the white officers who served in these units. The walking portion of the tour will allow people to follow in the footsteps of the last part of the attack on June 15th, and end at the monument erected for United States Colored Troops. Furthermore, the tour addresses how these men saw their service as a means to combat racial prejudice and to demand the government treat them as citizens.
