For Eric Sall, paint is his object and subject never mind those suggestions of furniture, creatures or canvas awnings. Sall builds his work in a literal sense, starting with thin paint that quickly swells to supernatural bulk a few inches off the canvas, or as in "Splitting Image," into an outrageous conglomeration of pattern and texture. What seems to begin as arbitrary mark-making soon takes on a life of its own based on the possibility of paint.
With Kohan, and maybe more so with Sall, one must disregard what the past teaches us to expect of a painting in order to find pleasure in the now. Paulette Roberts-Pullen
