17th Street Farmers' MarketWhere: 17th & Main streets, Richmond.

When: Thursdays and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

Season: May-Oct. 28.

What to expect: The oldest, largest, hippest of the bunch, the 17th Street Farmers' Market is a vibrant combination of traditional farmers side by side with small craftsmen, organic and heirloom farmers, and artisanal bakers.

Byrd House MarketWhere: William Byrd Community House, 224 S. Cherry St., Richmond.

When: Tuesdays, 3:30-7 p.m.

Season: May-October.

What to expect: The newest of the markets, this Oregon Hill market is the most child-friendly, with a shady hay-bale sitting area, activities and 25-cent lemonade. All the major food groups are represented, with vendors from farms producing eggs, beef and pork, as well as fruits and vegetables. There's also a smattering of local craftsmen and bakers.

Goochland Rural MarketWhere: 2955 River Road West, Goochland.

When: May-Sept. 1: Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon; September 8-October 27, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

What to expect: Buy eggs with the horsey set, as well as honey and microgreens, at the Goochland Rural Market's new location. Produce abounds, and some of the most toothsome pies and cookies can be found here, along with spectacular flowers and pastured chicken.

Ashland Farmer's MarketWhere: Duncan Street behind Town Hall, Ashland.

When: Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon

Season: May-Nov. 24.

What to expect: A hot spot for Hanover tomatoes. In addition to selling produce, eggs, pork and beef, the market lists a wide variety of offerings, such as herbs, baked goods, flowers, honey and soap. S
