"The Wizard of Oz" at the Landmark Theater

March 25 and 26

Since its publication more than a hundred years ago, L. Frank Baum's children's novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” has seen so many sequels, prequels, reimaginings and interpreted adaptations that you'd think its fairytale-inspired setting and characters would be completely exhausted of any cultural consequence. Yet for some reason, the not-so-simple story of a girl getting swept up by a tornado, landing in a strange land, and traveling a yellow brick road with an anthropomorphic scarecrow, tin man, and lion to defeat a green-skinned witch commanding an army of flying monkeys just can't help but speak to generations of audiences. Drawing from the perhaps the most famous version, the 1939 Technicolor film starring Judy Garland, Broadway has unveiled a stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams. Featuring 21st-century design, production and special effects, Broadway in Richmond presents “The Wizard of Oz” at the Landmark Theater from March 25-26. $40-$63.
