The Whigs at the Canal Club

Saturday, Aug. 7

Since recording their 2002 debut, “Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip” in an empty frat house at the University of Georgia, Athens-based rock trio the Whigs have made a name for themselves with the kind of no-frills pluck that have made bands such as the Foo Fighters and Spoon into such big-name acts. Propelled by heavy guitar hooks and stomping drums alongside vocalist Parker Gispert's rasping yowl, the band has matured past the college rock scene to more anthem-ready territory with its recently released third album, “In the Dark.” Before joining the likes of the Black Keys and Kings of Leon for a huge U.S. ampitheater tour in September, the Whigs are scheduled to perform at the Canal Club on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. $8-$10.
