The Visual Arts Center of Richmond sports wood

While some U.S. citizens will spend April's Arbor Day with the customary observance of planting a tree, the Visual Arts Center of Richmond takes a much different approach showcasing its latest exhibit, “Turning Wood Into Art: The Jane and Arthur Mason Collection.” It displays more than 60 wood sculptures from the Mint Museum of Craft and Design's Jane and Arthur Mason Collection. Now before all you tree huggers start making a fuss about the raping of our natural resources, you'll be pleased to know that one of the primary functions of the show is to celebrate the union of the natural and the manmade, bringing together a material's inherent beauty with technique, concept and form, and creating something unique. With an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 3, featuring a talk by artist Todd Hoyer, the exhibit runs through June 14. 1812 W. Main St. 353-0094. — Mike Hilleary
