The members of Richmond’s vibrant vaudeville and burlesque community share their talents with the world at the Virginia Burlesque and Sideshow Festival. The three-day, full-immersion event features live performances with international acts, panel discussions, film viewings, workshops and awards. Headliners include juggler extraordinaire Paolo Garbanzo, carny preacher Armitage Shanks, burlesque aerialist Sadie Hawkins, the Slomski Family Cabaret and Richmond’s own Deanna Danger. A Friday kickoff, with hostess Danger, is followed by a midnight film viewing of “The Burlesque Assassins,” a tale of cold war espionage featuring a trio of sexy superspies trying to stop a villain bent on global domination. A Saturday night spectacular includes burlesque aerialist Sadie Hawkins and other vaudeville exploits. Throughout the weekend, workshops will teach methods of stagecraft, circus arts, fire performance, burlesque and more. And to finish it all off, the Camel plays host to a Sunday brunch cabaret with the Slomski Cabaret, where the festival’s bad behavior awards will be given away. The festival is May 31-June 2 at various locations including the New York Deli, the Byrd Theatre and Dogtown Dance Theater. Times and ticket prices at virginiaburlesque.com.
