Virginia Commonwealth University grabs its castanets as the music department celebrates its third Flamenco Festival, which will bring a group of leading flamenco artists to town. The event includes a series of three concert performances that shine spotlights on some of the leading flamenco musicians in the country. “Flamenco Completo” will feature guitarist Marija Temo and dancer Ulrika Frank in their collaborative showcase of flamenco, classical and contemporary styles. The next night’s performance, “Flamenco Fiesta,” showcases guitarist Miguelito — considered one of the foremost flamenco string players in the United States — along with dancers and singers. The “Flamenco Finale” features Richmond-based ensembles Suenos Gitanos, composed of VCU music students and alums, and Flamenco del Sur, a trio that fuses jazz, samba and tango into original and traditional flamenco tunes. In addition to playing in the festival, Miguelito will conduct a flamenco guitar master class on March 24 at 2 p.m. in the James Black Music Center. Admission is free for the master class. The VCU Flamenco Festival takes place at the Singleton Center for the Performing Arts from March 23-25. $10-$15. 828-6776.
