If I didn’t know better, I could believe that the Trillions were created in a lab by music executives trying to come up with the perfect pop-rock band. The Richmond group’s sound is damn near perfect. It has the hooks and harmonies most bands would die for. What’s even more amazing is that it manages to pull off its classic alternative rock merger without sounding contrived. The group’s insanely catchy, twin-guitar perkiness lives somewhere between Big Star and the Strokes, but its self-proclaimed “shred pop” is all its own. Given the right breaks, the Trillions could (and should) be huge given their uncanny knack for writing memorable melodies. They celebrate the release of their exceptional new album, “Superposition,” on Saturday, Jan. 31, at Strange Matter with opening sets by fellow ready-for-prime-time Richmond rockers White Laces and Manatree. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. strangematterrva.com.
