When I was on the radio, I used to say that Richmond was the cultural Mecca of the universe. It was meant to be humorous, but really I was only half-joking. For a town this size, Richmond and its surrounding counties have an incredible amount of cultural diversity. As proof, the Cultural Arts Center of Glen Allen holds the South African Fest launch party Friday, Sept. 12. It will open the ninth annual South African Food and Wine Festival at Grayhaven Winery on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14. The night-before event will feature different South African wines by the glass for sampling every half hour, a meet-and-greet with Man Vintners winemaker Francois Bezuidenhou and music from the Brooklyn-based African group Tuelo & Her Cousins. The cultural immersion begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15-$20. For information on the weekend call 556-3917 or visit
