Journalists often follow the money because wealth and access to it are reliable indicators of power.
But for our annual Power Issue, we widen the doors to people who hold the keys to power in Richmond. We consider influence, informal power and control of resources. We look at who leverages power to lead the local agenda, shape the future and inspire and create change in the community.
We do it because knowing who's in power is key to understanding how things happen in Richmond.
In this issue you'll find a mix of economic powerhouses and elected officials, institutional leaders, board members, grass-roots motivators and creative thinkers who effect change through a wide variety of methods, from financial clout and visionary strategies to the honed methods of activists in the street. — Brent Baldwin
