The James River Film Shorts Competition

When you consider the fading modern attention span, we probably should be living in a golden age of short films. And maybe you’ll think we are once you check out the cornucopia of independent celluloid offerings at the annual James River Film Shorts Competition on Friday, Nov. 7. The juried event features films by Joshua Thorud, Will Bryan, Mary Beth Reed, Spencer Neale, John Hager, Les Owen, Mike Buchbauer, Ann Deborah Levy, Luke Szabados and Christina O’Connell — competing for a $2,000 grand prize. Known for her work on “Sunshine Cleaning,” “The Darkness” and “Alma,” Richmond writer, director and editor Megan Holley will serve as host. She’ll also screen one of her early short films, as well as designate the winner of the second annual Kathryn Stephens Virginia filmmaker award. Audience members vote to determine which cinematic creation walks away with the coveted people’s choice award. The films start at 6:30 p.m. at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
