The Iconic Mr. Smedley Returns to Richmond

After nearly 10 years in storage, the sculpture of a street performer, Mr. Smedley, found a new home at Jefferson Park on May 8.

Sculptor Jack Witt created it for the 6th Street Marketplace, where it stood for years until the market was demolished in 2003.

The Union Hill Civic Association lobbied to have the statue relocated at the park. “It’s in the perfect place,” the association’s secretary, Mary Field, says. “It looks like he’s welcoming you to the park.”

An official dedication is scheduled for June 25.
