The Grave Hookers EP Release Party at the Camel

Sunday, Feb. 1

The Grave Hookers’ music is made of midnight creepers. The Richmond bass-and-drum duo’s seething lo-fi take on garage blues is best heard after the sun goes down. Slithering beneath the shadows of Howlin’ Wolf, Black Flag and Tom Waits, what’s most striking about the Hookers is their sense of space. Songs such as “Burnt Bourbon,” “The Come Down” and “Dark Was the Night” — from their new release, “The Junk E.P” — convey what isn’t heard as much as what is. Drummer, vocalist and founding member Robert John Van Zanten emotes in the same vein as Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, using his unhurried drawl to extenuate his blues-driven diction. Creepy yet strangely soothing, the Grave Hookers bring their dark intoxications to the Camel on Sunday, Feb. 1, with openers Die Twice, Suneater, Headlessmantis and Industry Standard. Doors open 8 p.m. Free. thecamel.org.
