The Frog and the Redneck
1423 E. Cary St. 648-3764
The Frog and the Redneck is probably sought out by as many out-of-towners as locals. Chef Jimmy Sneed's appearances at numerous charity events throughout the country and on TV with Julia Child have given him a high profile among those interested in food and dining.
Co-owner Adam Steely, who oversees the mural-decked, comfortable dining room, has assembled an admirable selection of spirits for the bar, as well as a stellar wine list of French and American wines.
Menus are printed daily and tweaked to reflect market availability. Sneed's strength is his treatment of fish and shellfish, but rabbit, bison and beef are also wonderful treats here. The presentations are straightforward, even plain, but the simplicity allows the primary flavors to be the stars. You're likely to gain a new appreciation for grouper, snapper, halibut or other sea creatures you may never have heard of.
When culinary trends seem to have moved toward getting as many flavors on a plate as possible, Sneed and his kitchen staff enhance the essential flavors rather than mask them. The results are simply delicious. And don't leave without a dish of New Age
