After an eight-year Richmond hiatus, the Dance Theatre of Harlem is back to doing what it does best: pushing the boundaries of modern dance. Led by its executive director, South African-born Laveen Naidu, and Virginia Johnson, the company’s founding member and principal dancer for 20 years, the troupe brings its cross-cultural movements to Richmond CenterStage on Friday, Oct. 10. The company draws from the history of dance mixing African-American physical expressions with the motion traditions of Petipa, Balanchine and Byrd to create an energized hybrid of human perambulations. The internationally acclaimed troupe’s recent performances at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk for the Virginia Arts Festival were instant sell-outs, so don’t sleep on getting tickets for this one-night only performance. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $27-$127. richmondcenterstage.com.
