One thing that binds humanity together is that we all come from Africa. The color of your skin doesn’t matter — if you’re a human being, you’re African on the inside. The week-long holiday of Kwanzaa — Dec. 26 through Jan. 1 — conceived by activist and author Maulana Karenga in 1966, is a celebration of the origin of mankind. In an event organized by the Elegba Folklore Society, you’ll find the history and culture of the motherland in abundance at the Capital City Kwanzaa Festival. There will be performances, speakers, workshops and children’s activities to entertain and educate, and an African market and cuisine to sample. The keynote speaker is Los Angeles-based author and cultural historian Runoko Rashidi. The Capital City Kwanzaa Festival takes place Saturday, Dec. 28, from 1-9 p.m. at the Hippodrome Theater.
