Virginia-born prez James Monroe is most famous for his politically charged Monroe Doctrine. But summer nights, Ash Lawn, his Albemarle County home near Charlottesville, is all about music. For the 23rd year, The Ash Lawn- Highland Summer Festival is offering a wide range of musical offerings. This season, seated in the estate's boxwood gardens, opera and musical theater lovers can enjoy productions of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!," Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and Johann Strauss' "Die Fledermaus." These play in rotation from June 24 to August 13. Tickets range from $14 to $22.

On Wednesday nights from June 14 to July 19, the festival presents "Music at Twilight." Each evening is completely different: Broadway melodies one night, a mariachi band another. Ole!

Tickets range from $6 to $10. Dinner is available (catered by The Boar's Head Inn) or patrons can pack their own picnic suppers.

But what if it rains? Not to worry. Performances move to a covered pavilion.
