If Dave Brockie knew how much attention he would get from dying, he would have done it a long time ago. I jest about the recent passing of Richmond’s profane prodigal son, but to know the man as I did, the use of questionable humor is appropriate. His untimely death will loom large at this year’s Gwar B-Q, the annual celebration of vulgarity held by the still-grieving members of our city’s most notorious cultural export, taking place Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16 and 17, at Hadad’s Lake. Brockie’s alter ego, Oderus Urungus, will be put to public rest on Friday with a Viking burial and celebration. On Saturday, the Misfits, Ice T’s metal band Body Count, Iron Reagan, Loincloth and others pay their respects before Gwar hits the stage for the first time ever without David Murray Brockie leading them into battle. Original Beefcake bassist Michael Bishop will take over as master of ceremonies for what I am sure will be a very memorable show. For ticket prices and information on all the Gwar B-Q activities going on this weekend, go to gwarbq.com.
