Style Staffers Win in National Contest

Three Style Weekly staff members were recognized last week for their work in a national competition at the annual convention of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. This was the first year Style was eligible to participate in the contest.

The mix of satire and office attire in Deputy Managing Editor Ed Harrington's weekly cartoon "The HR Department" won first place in the category for cartoons appearing in three or fewer publications.

Art Director Jeffrey Bland won first place in cover design for publications with circulations under 50,000. He submitted a portfolio of three original photo illustrations: a fish with a typewriter-key tail for fiction contest "Original Tales"; a twisted tuba for "Pomp and Circumstances," an analysis of the performing arts center fiasco; and an image of pensive playwright Clay Chapman against a fiery backdrop for the profile "Sympathy for the Devil." Bland also won third place in the editorial layout category for the 2005 restaurant issue.

Associate Editor Brandon Walters won second place in the feature-story category for publications with circulations under 50,000. Her story "Hope Floats" chronicled the lives of the 13-member Morgan family and the swim school they operate.

The first-place winners will be collected in a book, "Best AltWeekly Writing and Design 2006." S
