The "HR Department" cartoon, drawn by Style Weekly Creative Director Ed Harrington, won top honors in the 2013 AAN Awards, given out Saturday during the annual convention of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies.
Harrington's long-running cartoon placed first among all newspaper circulations in the competition, selected by judges from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
Other work by members of Style's editorial team also was selected as among the most outstanding from a field of more than 900 entries submitted by alternative publications across the United States and Canada.
"Voices Carry: Evolution of the Modern Fight for Women's Rights," a collection of stories, photos and opinion essays published last year, won the second-place public service award among newspapers with circulations of less than 50,000. The team consisted of Melissa Scott Scott Sinclair, Jason Roop, Scott Bass, Vernal Coleman, Scott Elmquist, Thad Williamson, Adria Scharf, Dale Brumfield and Zack Budryk.
In the same circulation division, Sinclair won third place in the food writing category for her profile of restaurateur Kendra Feather and a cover story chronicling six months behind the scenes before the launch of the 525 at the Berry-Burk.
