Star Service

Who's doing right by Richmond's tables.

It’s an often thankless job, waiting tables, but some servers turn it into an art with grace and intuition. They become the difference between an acceptable meal and a memorable one, and sometimes they develop star power that keeps guests coming back. Here are a few local favorites who are doing more than earning their gratuities:

“Dare Jearman at Pasture is a gem. She’s always friendly, efficient, informative, and able to anticipate her customers’ needs. Matt Brehony at Secco is fun and witty, but a seriously attentive server. He knows the food and drink menu, but I like him best because he can explain the wines at a layman’s level, not sounding snobby. — Ellie Basch

“The servers at Heritage are impeccably trained — Gabe Smith, Kevin Smith and Michael Verner stand out. At Secco, Lincoln Smith and Matt are among the best in town.” — Robey Martin

“Paul Heitz, owner of Amour Wine Bistro, is the master of anticipating needs. Lincoln Smith at Secco is low-key, friendly and witty. William Wright at Bistro 27 shows longtime professionalism and is charming and endlessly attentive. Deanna Rodgers Baedke at Enoteca Sogno is knowledgeable, funny and as caring as if you were in her house.” — Karen Newton

“A great service duo at Belmont Food Shop, Daniel Duprey and Gabrielle Tenney, run the bar and the floor. They are extremely knowledgeable about food and beverages, and they serve as if they are greeting guests in their home.” — Genevelyn Steele
