Signs Everywhere

An astrologer in Carytown reads the city’s future for 2018.

Last year's solar eclipse signals political division ahead, a psychic astrologer says. But what's written in the stars for Richmond this year seems to be growth.

"There's a big emphasis on land and property so there's going to be a lot of construction and growth," says Nick Lasky, who works at Aquarian Bookshop in Carytown and bills himself as a psychic astrologer and healer. "But there's going to be some contention as well over that."

So what else lies ahead? What about the focus on the Richmond Public Schools?

Mayor Levar Stoney's increase to the meals tax for school construction has been met with mixed reactions, including a revolt by a group of restaurant owners and others who are doubtful based on the city's record with tax dollars.

But there are good signs ahead, says Lasky, a University of Richmond alumnus and astrology columnist for Awareness Magazine.

"There's going to be some positive energy," he says. "It looks like a good step in things moving forward for the public-school systems. There's going to be a lot more action."

Of course, there's big news on the national level, too.

The total solar eclipse in August and a partial one this month fall at interesting places within President Donald Trump's birth chart, Lasky notes.

Last August, the eclipse fell on his ascendant — or the rising sign on the eastern horizon when the Donald was born — and Mars. In February, it fell opposite his Mars and on his progressed moon and south node of the moon, Lasky says.

Historically, eclipses have signaled changes with nobility and people in power.

But the solar eclipse won't have the same kind of influence on Richmond city government. It's more about larger leaders, he says, "like a president, king or queen."

The exception would be if the exact line of the eclipse passed through the specific locality of someone in power — and Richmond was not in the path of this one.

Lasky says he's really excited about the phenomenon of Jupiter just entering into the sign of Scorpio. "Jupiter and Scorpio bring out all these secrets and scandals," he says. "That's one of the biggest things propelling this revelation of sexual harassment and assault that is dominating the media right now."

Lasky believes more revelations, "a purging of the dark stuff that has been hiding in the shadows," will continue throughout the year.

As for Richmond's spiritual health, Lasky says it's thriving.

"We are a cross-section of the country and are an extremely diverse spiritual city," he says. "You have many different traditions having events freely throughout the city from the Greek Festival to the Psychic Festival to Yoga in the Park to the new Sufi Inayati center that just opened up. There are active communities for many spiritual traditions and that, to me, keeps the overall state of being very strong." S
