Ethiopian Update

A new, health-conscious menu is one of the changes at Nile Ethiopian Café near Virginia Commonwealth University. New owners Natan Teklemariam and his mother, Chef Yeshareeg Demisse, are reinvigorating the place at 309 N. Laurel St. with a freshened décor, upgraded service and an emphasis on fresh seafood and meats.

They're making their own gluten-free injera and authentic Ethiopian dishes, often boosting the nutritional value with flax seeds and other healthy ingredients. Several vegan dishes are new to the menu as well, giving local vegans three spots within a couple of blocks to find options, including Ipanema Café and Harrison Street Coffee Shop.

Demisse trained at the Kushi Institute, a New England-based macrobiotic and healing arts facility, and she considers a holistic, healing diet one of the restaurant's new contributions to the community. The nonsmoking café serves lunch and dinner daily except Mondays.

Grill, Interrupted

Ipanema Grill, not to be confused with Ipanema Café on Grace Street, is moving later this month. The popular Brazilian grill will relocate from Gayton Road in Short Pump to a larger, 160-seat dining room at 3641 Cox Road. Everything else remains the same, from its all-you-can-eat menu of grilled meats and veggies to its warm and engaging service.

Earthly Harvest

Goochland has a new farmers' market that features high-quality farm and artisan products that are sustainably produced.
