Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at Maymont

Thursday, May 6

Musically speaking, there's a big difference between emulating the influences of the past and successfully capturing the essence of another time period. Tapping the heart of late-'60s, early-'70s funk and soul, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are a genuine revivalist band, delivering an impeccable kind of nostalgia trip full of breezy horns and smooth rhythm grooves. As a woman who surely paid her dues (singing backup vocals on funk and disco records in the '70s, and at one point working as a guard at New York's Rykers Island when her genre fell out of favor in the '80s), Jones has a swagger in her voice that feels experienced, defiant and most importantly, believable. Finally catching the attention of audiences outside of their niche and following with their fourth album, “I Learned the Hard Way,” Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings open this season's Groovin' in the Garden series at Maymont (rescheduled from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden) on Thursday, May 6, at 6 p.m. $20-$25.
