Adults and full-grown college students may have wept upon learning of Shaka Smart’s departure for Austin. But what about the kids signed up for his summer camp?
Heading into its seventh season, Shaka Smart Basketball Camps was scheduled to offer its first five-day session of the season starting June 22. Hundreds of youth, entering grades 3-12, have participated through the years.
In addition to getting students in front of Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball coaching staff, each session in the Siegel Center included a “photo with Coach Smart for every camper.”
The camp’s website, Coachsmart.com -- the “Official Site of Shaka Smart” -- is silent on the coach’s departure. But a representative of the company reached by phone confirms that the camp is canceled and that refunds for the full $250 cost of the camp will be issued to all campers who registered.
She says that when VCU decides who will replace Smart, the new coach will hold his own camp and the kids can re-register.
What if the campers don’t think the new coach is as awesome as Smart?
“That’s your choice if you want to sign your child up,” she says.
