RVA Music Night on Brown’s Island

Friday, May 24. 5:30 p.m. $5.

Get a small taste of Richmond’s music scene at this week’s Friday Cheers. RVA Music Night features jazz funk favorites No BS Brass Band, ska rockers Murphy’s Kids and electro rock band the Former Champions. No BS is almost synonymous with Richmond, its large ensemble playing venues as varied as late nights at the Camel and Balliceaux to such family-friendly events as the Richmond Folk Festival. Last week the band celebrated the release of its new album, “RVA All Day,” which has received glowing write-ups in Time and Spin. Not satisfied with just one album, No BS also will release “Fight Song: Tribute to Charles Mingus” on July 5. Influenced by ska bands Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake, Murphy’s Kids mix elements of ska, reggae, punk and funk and known for energetic live performances. The group released its latest album, “The Anthemic Pandemic,” in 2011. The Former Champions released their second studio album, “Special FX Machine,” this year and continues playing local venues and touring across the country. RVA Music Night takes places on Brown’s Island for Friday Cheers, May 24, at 5:30 p.m. $5. venturerichmond.com. — Andrew Cothern
