"611: American Icon." On May 29, 1950, railroaders for the Norfolk & Western Railway watched as the Class J 61l locomotive rolled into the yard. As they readied her for service, they couldn’t have known that the 611 was born into a world already planning her demise. Nor did they imagine that 65 years and one day later, the great 611 would triumphantly thunder home to Roanoke under her own steam power. 611:American Icon is the story of the most famous steam passenger locomotive in the world. Exclusive restoration footage takes you inside the locomotive's massive boiler and firebox, the cab and iconic nose.
