Rare is the band that grows its own instruments. Rarer still is a band that grows its own instruments and can make music from the fruits of its harvest that can cover a large swath of stylistic ground. Such is the case of the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra. Consisting of some of Richmond’s hardest working and consistently evolving experimental musicians (Christopher Hibben, Barry Bless, Pippin Barnett, John Ramsey and Arthur Stephens), their homegrown percussive expressions are easy to love. Why? Everything they do has a playful charm to it. They infuse their global polyrhythmic quests with a joyful sense of possibility. The Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra shares its family-friendly bounty of earthly delights Thursday, April 17, at Sabot Stony Point from 5:30-7 p.m. Free. sabotatstonypoint.org.
