Revenge of the Birds

“The Birds” at the Byrd.

While Alfred Hitchcock receives most of his accolades in the thriller genre for his works “Psycho,” “Rear Window” and “Vertigo,” it's difficult to argue the impact his 1963 film, “The Birds,” has had on man-versus-nature movie scares. Often considered to be the last great work of the director's career, only a handful of filmmakers would have been able to take such a frightless plot — birds become violent and attack a bayside community — and turn it into a camera-cutting frenzy of fluttering wings and pecking beaks. With numerous trick shots and special effects that have aged fairly well, “The Birds” comes to the Byrd Theatre for a benefit screening Friday, April 24, at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. $10. Free popcorn. 2908 Cary St. 852-8832. — Mike Hilleary
