Report From Bryant Park: Anna Sui's Spring Looks

The energy surrounding Bryant Park in Manhattan during fashion week is intense and intimidating when you're a girl from Richmond wearing cut-off jean shorts. This is how I found myself approaching the Anna Sui Spring 2008 fashion show Sept. 10.

Climbing the stairs leading into the fashion tent, I'm surrounded by photographers, well-dressed fashionistas, those who think they are well-dressed fashionistas, and celebrities (Lisa Marie Presley and Vincent Gallo are at this show).

Everyone's scurrying into the arena at a rapid pace, and while chaos subsides and attendees take their seats, the show begins. High-volume, bass-thumping radio hits play, and the pixie-punk-like models speed down the runway. The theme of this collection is feminine and flirty. Chiffon dresses are mixed with masculine plaids, stripes, patterns and knits, each outfit carefully crafted in the signature Anna Sui style.

With the last model down the runway and a brief wave by the designer herself, the show ends as quickly as it began. Spectators flood from the tent in search of the free beverages available outside. With the next fashion show starting within the hour, new guests line up and the cycle continues.
