"Bill Hicks Live: Satirist, Social Critic, Stand-Up Comedian"

"We have a Bible out called 'The New Living Bible,' it's the Bible in updated and modern English," Hicks says during a film of a 1992 London performance. "I guess to make it more palatable for people to read. But it's really weird, when you listen to it. 'And Jesus walked on water. And Peter said, "Awesome!"' Suddenly we got Jesus hanging ten across the Sea of Galilee. Christ's Bogus Adventure, you know. Deuteronomy 90210, you know."

This package includes three performance films that repeat some material but give the viewer a chance to see how Hicks sharpened, extended and connected jokes over time. "Just a Ride" is a bonus documentary that's also a snapshot of late '80s and early '90s standup, with cameos by Hicks admirers David Letterman, Brett Butler, Eddie Izzard and a host of lesser known but worthy comics like Richard Jeni and Allen Havey.

Hicks's material — foul-mouthed, aggressive, dark and sexual — isn't to everyone's taste. But at a time when the country is getting less secular, and the "moral values" majority claims a mandate, it's exhilarating to revisit this avenging angel of dissent. — Mark Mobley
