Ray Boone’s “Bully Pulpit”

In this former heart of the Confederacy that reeks of wealth, power and sympathy for a Civil War designed to continue the use of enslaved Africans as chattel for monetary gain; where many of their descendents barely eke out a living for basics, such as food and shelter; where 9-year-old African-American pupils write school essays about “not having enough food in the house;” the journalistic perspectives of “an old school newsman,” like editor Ray Boone become necessary and urgent. I find Style Weekly’s description of the Richmond Free Press as “his bully pulpit,” subtly reflective of a Southern, white-privilege attitude, derogatory in tone and highly offensive.
