The Rappahannock Tribe is one of seven federally recognized sovereign nations in Virginia and were among the first to greet the English colonists and Captain John Smith in the 17th century. Ancestors of the present day tribe lived at several locations along the Rappahannock River, including what is now known as Belle Grove Plantation.
