Porch Art

Better than Elvis on black velvet

Wilhelm, a second-year student in painting and printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University, says he's trying to counterbalance the "seriousness" he sees in the art world. He likes the idea of giving passersby something to look at, and apparently his audience agrees. Once, when his neighbor's landlord complained about the paintings, Wilhelm took them down, but people left notes on his porch asking for them back.

"More often than not, I'll be sitting on the porch and people will come up to look at them. I end up meeting a bunch of different people," Wilhelm says. It's not all about chitchat, however; he's sold two paintings that way.
