Popular Arts Venues Undergo Shake-up

Rob Acosta-Lewis, 1708’s board president, says Tetlow and the board saw eye to eye in terms of the vision for the gallery. Her departure, he says, was a question of “how much responsibility is the gallery willing to let go of to let the director achieve those goals.” She left March 10. Acosta-Lewis says Tetlow was “very enthusiastic, very professional,” and the decision that she leave was mutual.

1708, one of the oldest artist-run galleries in the country, hired Tetlow, a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s sculpture program, in December. Tetlow could not be reached for comment by press time.

Mark Brandon was hired as managing director at the Firehouse to “button-up the business aspects” of the theater, says Erica Farrell, a Firehouse board member. In the end, however, “there were some basic chemistry issues,” Farrell says of Brandon, who left Firehouse last week. Firehouse’s artistic director, Carol Piersol, and Joe Walton, interim managing director, have taken over management of the theater while it searches for a new managing director.

Brandon, who owned Davis & Main restaurant for years and ran for City Council in 2004, is not sure what his next move will be. He’s ruled out a run for council, but is considering opening another restaurant. S
