Pinch Hitters: Egyptian Celebration

Saturday: 1:15 p.m., Richmond Times Dispatch/Richmond.com Stage and 6:15 p.m., MWV Stage.
Sunday: 4 p.m., MWV Stage.

The whirling dervish-derived Egyptian Celebration is pinch-hitting for popular festival veterans, the Iranian Ensemble Shanbehzadeh. That group was unable to get into the country because of visa issues. The original dervishes were Sufis, followers of a branch of Islamic mysticism that sought transcendence through music and kinetic motion. Egyptian Celebration performs a popular secular appropriation of this tradition. Expect kaleidoscopic swirling, spinning disks of multicolored fabric and traditional Egyptian music.
