Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia
While studying business in college, Peter Sokol volunteered one of his afternoons picking up trash on the highway. He was hooked, he says: "It was fun and I felt good about it. Then I realized there were actually careers in volunteer organizations."
So he decided to hit the nonprofit road with his two business degrees, bringing a much-needed and often unique dimension to the organizations where he's worked. He found a new calling in 2002, when he encouraged at-risk youth he was working with at Elk Hill Farm to volunteer at Meals on Wheels.
There, from his position of volunteer coordinator to his current title as director of operations, Sokol has been instrumental in a huge collaborative endeavor with Central Virginia Food Bank to build a community kitchen, which opens its doors in October.
He's also one of 15 nutrition professionals chosen from across the country for the National Center for Nutrition Leadership Fellows, a program designed to help end hunger within the community.
During his spare time, Sokol serves on the executive committee of the Historic Richmond Quoit Club, lobbies for the human rights organization Equality Virginia and plans New Year's Eve parties like the one he had at his Church Hill home last year, a Las Vegas-style fundraiser for the Fan Free Clinic.
