Seems unlikely that the blues would ever have evolved out of Hawaii. Nice place like that, how can you make sad music? This is what crosses the mind when listening to Hawaii's Pepper, cold thuggin' outta Kailua Kona. If a guitar can possibly sound like a bouncing yellow ball, Pepper manages to make it happen. It's a blend of surf music and reggae — blended by people who sound like they might have actually seen a beach or two rather than folks cranking surf rock out of Dubuque — plus that guitar that would be sorta testosteroney if it weren't so good-natured. Pepper plays Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m. $15. 619-1900 or www.thenationalva.com.
