Our wish list of 20 things we'd like to bring along into the next century and 20 things we'd like to leave behind in the old one.

Sorting the Century

Think about moving. Think about standing in your attic, the gravitational pull of a new attic already tugging at you from the inside. The papers are signed and the date is set. You are moving out, moving on. And so, there's the attic. Stuff that needs to be sorted through, because now is the time to decide what is vital to you, what simply must be brought along.

That's how we've been thinking about the century. The date is set. We are moving. What will we bring along? What will we leave behind?

We've constructed this list of 20 things we think are worthy of packing up and 20 things we wouldn't mind leaving in the attic.

You might notice we seem to favor some of the low-tech aspects of the century over the high-tech — the TV over the Internet, for example. We'd like to dump all the things that constantly beep at us — cellphones, virtual pets, faxes and pagers. Call us Luddites, but perhaps we just haven't had time to warm up to the cold hardware yet. Maybe we (or our counterparts) would feel differently on the precipice of the 22nd century when pondering the 21st. Maybe we would find our (cryogenically preserved) selves pining for the quiet bleeps of the cellphone over that constant ringing from the chips in our heads. Perhaps we'd wax nostalgic for the intimacy of the Internet, back when we used it for information and not the other way around.

Your list might be much different. After all, there's a lot of stuff in that attic.
