Derived from scientific theory and observation, Japan’s Osaka Monaurail is a somatic-cell nuclear transfer of the spirit of James Brown. As with any clone, the group’s genetic derivation is strikingly similar to that of the late, great, hardest-working man in show business. But its chromosome replication cannot continue its duplication all the way to the end of the funky chromosome. In other words, it will never be as good as the real thing. Still, Osaka Monaurail is impressive. It delivers Brown’s sweaty early-1970s funk with swagger using everything in the sex machine’s bag of musical and performance tricks to make audiences get up, get into it and get involved. Osaka Monaurail brings its therapeutic cloning to Strange Matter on Thursday, Oct. 30. Soul Power DJs Mr. Felty and DJ Pari spin soul, funk and R&B classics and rarities on 45-rpm vinyl before and after. Doors open at 9 p.m. $10. strangematterrva.com.
