Can't make it to the Folk Fest? As it has every year since the National Folk Festival first pitched its tents, WCVE-FM 88.9 will be live from the Altria Stage at the Richmond Folk Festival. The public radio station is set to broadcast what will amount to about 14 hours of live music and interview features.
Producer Steve Clark says that pulling off the broadcast will require eight people on-site, from the stage to "riding the board" to the live announcer, no small feat for a station this size. WCVE secures rights from the artists for a limited number of broadcasts, so unfortunately there's no archiving online. But every year before the start of the festival, WCVE replays hour-long encore performances Saturdays at 1 p.m. beginning in July — just to whet your appetite.
Of course, now anyone can listen online as well. Station Manager Bill Miller says that people typically have tuned into the Folk Fest from places such as New York and the Midwest. "It's a big highlight of the year for us," he says.
You can listen Friday from 6:30-10 p.m., Saturday from noon-5 p.m., and Sunday from noon till the close of the festival.
