Workers erected a 30-foot, 1,500-pound bronze spire Friday morning on the site the new First Freedom Center at 14th and Cary streets. The First Freedom Center is connected to the newly finished Courtyard and Residence Inns by Marriott, which sits on the site where the Virginia General Assembly met in 1786 to pass the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. The spire rises in front of a 24-foot wall that is inscribed with an excerpt from the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. The spire's designer, Christopher J. Hildebrand of Tektonics Design Group oversaw this morning's installation. An official dedication will take place on January 16, 2014, National Religious Freedom Day.
