Any musician who cites Virginian bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley and the Norwegian black metal of Burzum as influences is going to draw my interest. Clicking play on Mister S’s track, “Yggdrasil Rising” — from his debut Nine Gates Records release, “From Whence We Hail — Onward! Into the Mystery” — brings a fitting summation of the creepy, symphonic goth that proceeds to traipse morbidly out of the speakers. Usually I shy away from fantasy-based bummers, but something about the track’s recalcitrant stoicism made me play it again and again. Mister S and Deanna Danger Rose celebrate the release of his album Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Lair, 17 W. Main St., with a show featuring guest appearances by Daniel Klyne of Appalachian Winter Ritual, Brett Zwerdling of Maharal and Ritual in Ash. Dinner, drinks and wandering performances begin at 6 p.m. before the slithering eerie kicks in at 8. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. thelairrva.com.
