Listening to Michael Rider is like listening to Kate Bush through a prism of Justin Bieber. As repugnant as that may sound to some, the boy wonder from Richmond somehow manages to pull it off. Simply put, the kid has skills. Following the release of his debut solo album, “Lighthouse,” in 2011, the pianist shared stages with Megan McCormick and Rufus Wainwright and released two impressive videos. His new CD, “Hidden Treasures,” is defined by his surprisingly lyrical keyboard melodies and confessional wordplay. Sensitive without being a wimp, Rider plays beyond his years. It isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but there’s simply no denying the depth of his budding talent. Michael Rider plays Monday, Aug. 4, at the Camel. Sam McCoig and Billy Bacci open. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $8. thecamel.org.
