Thankfully, no. But it proves how little we know of Latin American bands here in the States, even if said bands came over here from Cuba with that tropical sound and decided to stay. Tiempo Libre represents the cultural shift across those infamous miles separating Cuba from the mango salsa that is Miami. The band was up for a Grammy this year, broadcasting the sounds of timba to a wider audience — timba being a sort of jazzy dance music coming out of Cuba, not quite salsa, but similar, with elements of hip-hop and funk. If this infiltration of our borders frightens you, there is plenty of room under that big rock. For the rest, know that timba doesn't hate freedom, and Tiempo Libre is making strides to fill the ears of the nation. And we must listen and shake our various parts in the most democratic of fashions. Tiempo Libre plays the University of Richmond Modlin Center Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8-$32. 289-8980. S
