If you were playing six degrees of separation between Sonic Youth, Swans, John Zorn, Afrika Bambaataa, the Dresden Dolls and Herbie Hancock, the answer would be Martin Bisi. The New York-based producer, musician and cultural antagonist has spent his life twisting knobs for some of the most influential musicians of the last 50 years. Now Bisi steps out from behind the mixing board to bring his menacing brand of chamber art rock to Gallery5. His strangely soothing sardonic forays into surrealistic agitation aren’t surprising: Bisi’s career is rooted in enabling abrasiveness, but his solo work is imbued with an impressionistic No Wave creepiness all his own. The show takes place Friday, May 30, with fellow New Yorkers Invisible Things and the Richmond duo Geometric Shapes opening. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $4. gallery5arts.org.
